In this Premium Video Tutorial Julian Rodgers demonstrates how an understanding of the role of attack time can be used to dramatically reshape the transient character of appropriate sounds.
Engineers and producers love to discuss compression, but the more exotic uses often get more attention than they possibly deserve. To the novice, it might appear that compressors are used more for bus compression duties, or in parallel, or side-chained to the kick drum, than they are used as straight-ahead channel compressors, controlling the dynamic range of source material or being used more aggressively to shape the envelope characteristics of a sound.
In this premium tutorial, Julian takes a stock Logic Pro compressor and FabFilter’s Pro-C2 and uses them to both accentuate and moderate the attack of the snare. You will be able to hear the results, both on their own, and in context with the rest of the kit and see how the attack times relate to the structure of the sound.
