In this premium video tutorial, Pro Tools Expert team member Julian Rodgers considers the five different mechanisms employed by hardware compressors to achieve the results they do. Each method belongs to a different period of the history of the developments of audio technology and each sounds different.
As an exercise to examine the differences between these methods Julian presents all five together. In this example, he uses plug-ins from Universal Audio. While most plug-in manufacturers produce emulations of some of these styles of compression, UAD has examples of all of them. The five types do exclude some oddities like Zener limiters or Germanium-based compressors but to capture the broad differences this is probably justified.
