The Eventide Instant Flanger is William Wittman’s Software Product Of 2020, he explains why.
My favourite new software this year has to be the brilliantly executed Eventide Instant Flanger MkII plugin.
One thing I always loved about the hardware unit was the ability to create a moving stereo image from a mono input source. The Time After Time ‘shaker’ sound was spread across the stereo field like that with the Eventide Flanger and it’s always had a special place in my sonic heart.
Obviously, this plugin also does all the expected things you’d want from any flanger, but it also somehow captures that bit of special “fairy dust” that the original hardware has as well as giving me the unique stereo spread that box could create.
In this article we look at some of the common, and less common modulation effects, examine what they are and why and how they sound the way they do.
Most flangers can’t ‘pass through zero’. This is a central element to the original effect but is more difficult to create as a real time effect than generic flange effects. This tip shows how to do it using real time plugins.

Eventide has released Instant Flanger Mk ll, a free update to registered owners of Eventide’s Anthology X or Anthology Xl software bundles. Instant Flanger Mk ll emulates to iconic sounds of the original 1975 Eventide Clockworks Instant Flanger hardware unit. We try it on an electric guitar part to see how well it stands up to the original hardware it is based on.
