Arturia’s modern modelling technique delivers a trio software modulation effect emulations of classic and sought after analog classics hardware, with very authentic sonic character. The suite includes circuit-accurate emulations of the Dimension-D Analogue Chorus, the BL-20 Multi-mode Flanger and the Bi-Tron Dual Phaser.
Chorus DIMENSION-D
Chorus adds subtle swirls and slow pitch modulation for a range of rich moving textures - but the Dimension-D became a go-to for many producers thanks to the synergy between the BBD architecture, delicate compression, expansion & filtering, and a unique stereo wet/dry cross-mix that made for a broader and warmer sound to a stereo mix. Each feature has been carefully reconstructed in plugin form, component by component, to give your virtual studio one of the most sought-after effects units of all time.
Phaser BI-TRON
The humble phaser was one of the first widely-available guitar effects on the market, achieved by modulating all-pass filters on an input signal As the world’s first dual phaser, the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase was popularised by everyone from Smashing Pumpkins, Prince, Kraftwerk and Chromeo. Arturia set about studying, remaking, and enhancing this prized handmade effect, using their TAE (True Analog Emulation) technology to replicate every subtle detail. They’ve even modelled the control panel and expression pedal functionality.
Flanger BL-20
A rare studio gem, the Flanger BL-20 goes from faint stereo width to compound modulation with analog character. By applying an undetectable delay to the dry signal, the modulated signal is able to reach - and eventually pass over - the original starting point of the signal. This totally cancels out certain frequencies - resulting in distinct dips in the sound. This is known as ‘zero-crossing’ or ‘through-zero’ flanging, perfect for that dynamite ‘80s guitar sound. Flanger BL-20 has the option of multiple modulation sources - the default LFO, a responsive envelope follower, or a static manual override - giving a uniquely animated quality.
In this video for Production Expert, Brent takes a look at these three classic modulation effects, and some useful feature panels folded away for the contemporary DAW user.
