In this free video tutorial, brought to you with the support of Avid, Pro Tools Expert Team member Julian Rodgers looks at Avid Multi-band Dynamics. When should you choose a Multi-band compressor and how do you take control of them, especially if you find them complicated to use?
Why Are You Using It?
I approach multi-band compressors with caution as I’ve always thought they have so much potential to do harm. Unless you have a very clear idea about what you are trying to achieve my advice it to leave well alone and if you’re cruising presets looking for something you like then I’d say, in the same way as giving a glass of blackcurrant to an excited child in room with a white carpet, are you sure thats a good idea…?
Single Band Vs Multi-band
In this video Julian demonstrates the difference between using single band compressors on individual tracks versus using a single band compressor across all of those tracks and shows how the undesirable side effects which can occur using a single band compressors can be avoided using a multi-band compressor. He explains the slightly unfamiliar controls and demonstrates how easy it is to set up the Multi-band Dynamics plug-in using as many of the four bands as you need.
