In this video, Pro Tools Expert Technical Editor James Ivey teams up with Rich Rogers of Workstation Pros to test the Universal Audio Apollo range of audio interfaces running on Windows connected via Thunderbolt 2.
Universal Audio announced their Thunderbolt drivers for the Windows platform some time ago and yet we have seen or heard very little about this in the form of real world tests. In this announcement, there were a great many restrictions. The main one being support for Thunderbolt 3 only. This new format for Thunderbolt has been very slow to be adopted by PC manufacturers so James and Rich wanted to find out if the Thunderbolt Apollos would run under the older Thunderbolt 2 protocol. Watch and find out about the process they went through to install and test the interfaces with an HPZ640 workstation computer as they went into 'unsupported' territory.
Following the release of Apple Thunderbolt 3 computers like the Mac Mini 2018 and the iMac Pro, we have seen some confusion about which thunderbolt expansion chassis you can use with a Thunderbolt equipped Apple computer and so we thought it would be helpful to put together a guide especially as the transition to Thunderbolt 3 has muddied the waters in this area.
Universal Audio, has announced the Thunderbolt 3 Option Card for Apollo rackmount interfaces at NAMM 2018. The card is compatible with Intel’s new Thunderbolt 3 technology on the latest Mac and Windows computers and is designed to deliver high bandwidth, low latency connectivity for Apollos to Thunderbolt 3-equipped Mac and Windows systems.

Community member Knut Richard Vanderloock decided to take on the challenge to see if he could get his older machine with Thunderbolt 1 to work with his UAD hardware, even though it is not supported by UAD. In part 1, he ended up having to reinstall Windows 10, In this second part, he has more success and covers preparing the system, the system settings including BIOS, the correct installation routine, and shares a video of his working setup.
Late last year UAD announced Apollo Windows 10 Thunderbolt Compatibility but with the caveat that PCs must be equipped with Thunderbolt 3 via USB-C and that older Thunderbolt systems will NOT be supported.
