Jeff Sepeda, a.k.a. "Doctor Synth," is dedicated to keeping the ROMpler synths of the late 1980s and '90s up and running. Jeff brought a collection of approximately 35 of these beasts to Knobcon 2017, and beamed about their reliability and stability. At this time, they're also living in the shadow of the analog renaissance and therefore very affordable on the used market.
His specialties include upgrades such as installing flash memory and helping musicians restore sounds when an internal battery goes dead. His view is that most users are far better off getting a battery and a Sys-Ex file from him and doing the job themselves than taking their aging but still useful ROMpler to a shop where, as he says, "They don't know how things were done 20 years ago." Another of his sidelines is turning vintage ROMpler presets into cell phone ringtones.
As you can see in the video below, his enthusiasm is infectious, and he's definitely a guy worth ringing up if you have one more more sample-based rackmount synths just laying fallow.
