This Friday's free plug-in is the fantastic Little Plate reverb from SoundToys. It's an emulation of classic plate reverb, in which the dry signal is amplified by an electro-magnetic transducer, which then vibrates a large metal sheet (about 2x3 meters), resulting in the reverberated signal. Plate units were large and heavy, but before digital reverb, they were the only means to simulate reverberation as opposed to actually recording in a room that had the desired acoustic qualities.
The most well-known plate reverb is the EMT 140, and the SoundToys team collected not one, not two, but five units for the purpose of modeling Little Plate. As you can see, the interface is very simple, with controls for decay in seconds, dry/wet mix, and low cut. Of course, they took advantage of the freedom the digital domain offers; on a real plate, you can't set the decay time to infinity, for example.
Plates don't sound like a room, nor are they supposed to. They have their own lush character that makes, say, a vocal really shine. (To take one example, the EMT 140 is all over Stevie Nicks' vocals on the classic Fleetwood Mac album Rumours.) Or, put it on that synth lead or top loop in your latest floor-banger and listen to the part jump out from the mix just a little.
Best of all, you can get Little Plate absolutely free through November 22, 2017. Just go to this page and create an account. While you're there, check out their entire plug-in selection. SoundToys have always gone their own way in terms of the aggressive and sometimes the downright weird effects, and to say they have their own identity is an understatement. They're definitely not a "me too" plug-in developer.
