People can be a little sniffy about using the plug-ins that ship free with Studio One, one question in their minds is can they compare with premium plug-ins from some of the pro audio industries best brands?
We decided to put the plug-ins found in the latest version of the PreSonus Fat Channel up against what are considered to be the best plug-in models around. We're not going to name brands but suffice to say the plug-ins we are comparing are from well-respected brands and cost a great deal more than Fat Channel... of course, it's free!
But does free mean bad or even substandard?
Rather than us tell you what we think we've put audio through both the Fat Channel and their paid-for equivalents so you can audition them below and say which you prefer. We've also included the original audio so you know what we started with.
One thing to mention is that to get the plug-ins sounding the same we had to set each plug-in differently, so the settings are not exactly the same. However, it's hard to know which plug-in is more accurate, they are most likely to have been modelled on different hardware units albeit the same model, which could account for the discrepancy in the differing audio. We say this as full disclosure, we leave you to make your own mind up what this means.
Can you tell the difference?
Take a listen and we will let you know which plug-in is which at a later date.
