Pro Tools 2020.11 is Audrey Martinovich’s Software Product Of 2020, she explains why.
This year, my pick for Software of the Year is going to have to be the Pro Tools 2020.11 update specifically because of the new audio to MIDI function. With this update, Melodyne 5 Essential is included which identifies the pitch of your audio and converts it into editable MIDI.
I fell in love with this update the first time I used it. A singer I’m beginning to work with asked me to produce the music for a song she had written. To get things started, I asked her to send me a clip of her singing her song so I could get a feel for melody and pick some chords that fit. I imported her audio file into Pro Tools, right-clicked on the file, chose “Audio to MIDI,” and just like that I had a new track of MIDI data that matched her singing. You can also just drag and drop the audio file onto a MIDI track. I was able to very quickly figure out she was singing in B minor for the verses and in G during the choruses as well as where we can throw in some 7 chords to spice things up. While this is something that can be done by ear, Audio to MIDI definitely sped up the process. I can already tell that I’ll be using Audio to MIDI all the time to figure out chord progressions, change pitches, or swap instruments.

Audrey Martinovich’s interest in recording was sparked from her background as a classically trained singer who, through experimenting with recording voice lessons and performances, fell in love with engineering. She co-owns Audio for the Arts with her business partner, Buzz Kemper, where in addition to their acoustic music projects, they produce podcasts, radio shows, advertisements, and do post-production for film.
