In this weeks podcast Russ Hughes is joined by Wesley Devore of PreSonus and Matt Hill of Liquidsonics to discuss the challenges of product development. Whether software or hardware, products need to solve a real problem experienced by potential users, be that a better sounding interface or a better sounding reverb. How do these experienced industry insiders balance the conflicting demands of making a product as good as it can be with making it affordable to the people who need it, and most importantly getting it out on the market in a timely way.
Making good products is hard, making great products which inspire users is really hard. Find out how the challenges are negotiated in this expert panel podcast.

The Guests
Wesley Elianna DeVore - Director of Marketing at PreSonus Audio Electronics
Starting as a studio assistant in a New Orleans recording studio in the late 90s, Wesley has since had stints as Pro Audio Manager at Guitar Centre, Tech support at East West sounds online until eventually joining PreSonus Audio Electronics in 2009. During her time there she has worked as a QA manager and product manager, being responsible for some of their most popular audio interfaces. She is now their Director of Marketing.
Matt Hill - Founder of LiquidSonics
LiquidSonics founder Matt Hill’s interest in music production technology started during his time at university in the early 2000s. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, and lacking a good reverb for his own productions Matt chose to produce a low latency convolution reverb for his final year dissertation. It not only got him the marks he needed to qualify but gave him the basis of a great sounding reverb, as good as anything else on the market at the time. After graduating Matt worked in a job in aerospace that if I told you the details of he would have to kill me. A few years ago he left behind his secret work and launched LiquidSonics, who are today one of the leading reverb developers in the world.
Talking Point
Product launches are public but product development happens largely behind closed doors. Good products don’t just happen. So how do new products get chosen? How much do they change during their development and how many ideas never make it through? We ask the people who do this every day.
How do you come up with ideas to develop a new product?
What is the process of bringing a product to market?
What are the greatest challenges during the process?
How do you feel when you first launch the product? Are you reading the forums, social media, reviews?
How do you feel when someone posts a comment like 'they need to put this feature in, it's easy!'
