When it was first released Valhalla’s Supermassive was so extraordinarily good for a free plugin that we couldn’t quite believe it. If you’ve never tried it you are missing out. November 2022 marks the 2.5 year anniversary of its release and the 2.5.0 update features two new reverb/delay modes: Scorpio and Libra.
ValhallaSupermassive was originally released on May 19th, 2020, with 8 original delay/reverb modes. Since that time, Valhalla have added additional modes to bring the total to 18. The 4 modes added in 2021 tended towards the experimental. Whereas the 4 modes added in 2022 extended Supermassive into more useable directions.
Libra Mode
Libra mode is the best mode in Supermassive for lush modulated reverbs with a natural decay. The Low EQ is useful for filtering low frequency content. The High EQ creates high frequency damping and the balanced modulation results in smooth sounding chorusing.
Scorpio Mode
Scorpio mode is more of a “conventional” reverb. The complex feedback path in Scorpio creates a lot of stereo width and by incorporating High EQ filters into the feedback paths Scorpio can create more realistic reverb sounds, where the high frequencies decay away over time.
