This week’s free plugin is a simple 3 band EQ from Voxengo which proves the point that simple, done well, can often be all you need.
What Is TEQ-421?
TEQ-421 is freeware equalizer plug-in. This easy to use equalizer features three bands tuned to deliver good results in most cases. The plug-in features internal ‘non-parametric harmonic coloration modules’ (derived from Voxengo’s HarmoniEQ plug-in) that produce a smooth saturation and a “presence” effect.
The thing we like about this EQ is the simplicity, it’s definitely not Pro-Q 3 but you don’t always need that much control. The low shelf is set at about 70Hz, the mid band at about 750Hz and the HF is around 7KHz. It feels good in use because it seems to pull down the level outside the EQ band with a boost and vice versa with cuts giving an even gain response making comparisons easy, and considering how many great records were made with EQ as simple as this (and often even simpler) you might find a good sounding fixed 3 band EQ as liberating as we did. And if you need more complexity just load up literally any stock EQ or your premium plugin of choice. It is 2022 after all!
