In this week’s podcast, Julian is joined by by William Wittman and Damian Kearns to talk about DAWs in the broadest sense. Do they offer the tools we actually need?
William Wittman
William Wittman is a Grammy Award-winning Producer/Engineer/Musician/Songwriter based in New York whose credits include the multi-platinum debuts from Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, the Hooters, and The Outfield. He’s a man of strong opinions. That’s why he’s such good value on the podcast!
Damian Kearns
Damian Kearns specialises in post-production for television and movies. Always looking to improve workflows and technology Damian was, among other duties, CBC Toronto's de facto in-house Pro Tools trainer. He’s a guy who knows his stuff and we’re happy to have him. Damian’s recently come off editing and mixing the CNN TV series “History of the Sitcom”.
Arturia
Arturia has a wide selection of software effects, including 3 Compressors, 3 Filters, 3 Preamps, and 3 Delays You'll Actually Use. The latest release, 3 Delays You'll Actually Use, includes Delay TAPE-201, Delay MEMORY BRIGADE, and the unique and experimental Delay ETERNITY. A bundle of selected effects, called the AudioFuse Creative Suite, is included with all AudioFuse audio interfaces. Visit arturia dot com to find out more on the Effects You'll Actually Use.
Talking Points
When did you first use a non-tape based system? What was it and what did you think at the time?
Do you use Pro Tools exclusively these days?
Have you had a different DAW of choice at any point in the past?
Given your experience of other DAWs (or tape/console workflows) is there anything in terms of workflow/power/latency you would change in your current workflow if you could?
The Hybrid Engine in Pro Tools sounds like such an obvious development (now it’s been done!) Previously we thought of the choice as a binary one between DSP or Native. Can we think of any other choices which don’t have to be either/or? What about the choice between accessible beginner software and expert software. Can it be both?
A.I. is already creating and simplifying workflows in plugins. What tasks do you think you would happily hand over to a software assistant.
Conversely, which decisions would you be uncomfortable handing over to an AI engine?
Is there any really simple stuff you’d change (presumably in Pro Tools) which would really make your day?
