Bogren Digital’s new IRDX Core audio plugin sets out to enhance the speaker and cabinet behaviour of any existing virtual rig. We have the details…
Designed to be added after your guitar amp or IR loader plugin, Bogren Digital claim that IRDX Core helps to deliver the natural movement, 3D sensation, slightly jagged edges, and the unpredictability you could previously only obtain by recording an actual guitar cabinet at high volumes with a microphone.
Well-made impulse responses are vital to obtaining a great guitar amp sound on the computer however they also have a significant limitation: they can only capture a static, linear image of the tone curve and resonances of the cabinet. Real-life guitar speakers, on the other hand, are non-linear, in other words they react dynamically to the signal that is being fed into them. It’s those non-linearities that IRDX emulates and adds to the user’s amp sim or IR loader.
IRDX technology is already built into Bogren Digital’s existing amp sim plugins including last year’s release MLC Subzero 100 which James Ivey checked out for his Production Expert review. IRDX Core now means you can take advantage of that technology in any IR loader plugin or a guitar amp simulation that includes a model of a speaker cab.
In their press release, Bogren state that “Using IRDX Core in a mixing situation adds width, movement, and excitement to guitar tracks. It also helps guitars sit better with the other instruments. With IRDX Core activated, the guitar sound reacts more realistically to your playing when you play through an amp sim in real time.”
We've briefly experimented with it using guitar sounds, and when IRDX Core is enabled, the distinctions between each stroke certainly do become more noticeable and multi-dimensional.
