In this week’s podcast, Julian is joined by Mark Wherry and Russ Hughes. With the recent release of Studio One 5.4, a fully native version of a DAW to add to Apple’s Logic Pro for Apple Silicon we are going to discuss the performance gains such a move has indicated and what this means for workflows and users experience.
Note On Audio Quality - The quality of Mark’s audio suffered a little on its journey to us from LA. Please bear with it as what he says is well worth hearing.
Mark Wherry
Mark Wherry is Director of Music Technology for Hans Zimmer's Remote Control studio in Santa Monica. He wrote the first 64-bit, multi-core sampler used in the production of a feature film soundtrack, alongside numerous other technologies. His film and soundtrack credits include Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Da Vinci Code, Sherlock Holmes, The Little Prince, Dunkirk, and many more.
Russ Hughes
Russ Hughes spent the 80s as a synth programmer in the early days of MIDI, sampling and synths, for many top artists. He spent several decades writing and recording and now enjoys the royalties of that work. In 2008 he founded the Experts websites after seeing many audio professionals did not have free access to high-quality content, the rest they say is history. In the last few years, he has taken a back seat from the editorial work to concentrate on other projects.
Arturia
Arturia has a wide selection of software effects, including 3 Compressors, 3 Filters, 3 Preamps, and 3 Delays You'll Actually Use. The latest release, 3 Delays You'll Actually Use, includes Delay TAPE-201, Delay MEMORY BRIGADE, and the unique and experimental Delay ETERNITY. A bundle of selected effects, called the AudioFuse Creative Suite, is included with all AudioFuse audio interfaces. Visit arturia dot com to find out more on the Effects You'll Actually Use.
Talking Points
With the releases of Studio One 5.4 we saw a DAW other than Logic running natively on an M1 mac. What did you think?
Now we have seen and can compare how a non-Apple DAW works natively and via Rosetta 2, do we think this will incentivise third-party developers to get their products Apple Silicon-ready?
Memory addressing - is this a message, which needs to get out to the consumers re: required memory in machines
What about PACE?
What about Hackintosh?
