In this video for Production Expert, Michael Costa shows us how he mixes keys with Waves Brauer Motion, a sophisticated panning tool to get creative and unique movement to your tracks, providing two panners, each of which feeds a stereo output.
Based on the rare FS1 Cyclosonic panner from Songbird. Cyclosonic is a novel signal processor that could produce 360 degrees of panning using just two speakers and then ups the ante by adding more generalized tone-shaping capabilities.
Brauer Motion comes with four different panning modes, four different trigger modes for a variety of on/off options; two panners with complete control; a dynamics section; pre-delay, motion filter, and precise control over the speed, width and depth; and a master section with gain and wet/dry controls. The modulation of the panning can be set to Sync mode (following the session tempo), or Free mode (which makes it independent of session tempo), while the input responds to the envelope of the source signal.
Width control allows you to expand a track's placement outside and beyond the original width of its stereo image. The depth controls how far back and forward a pan can go (circular vs oval). The Trigger section provides you with multiple options for how the panners respond to the input signal. Triggers can be one-shot or continuous, and there is both a sensitivity adjustment and a high pass filter.
Each panner has a Dynamics section that controls both the direct and output signals. Drive and Ratio are reminiscent of tube style, harmonic distortion. The Dynamics section also features high and low pass filters. Located below the Dynamics section is the Motion Filter section, where you can control the gain, up or down each pan's front and back paths, independent of one another. Finally, the Mixer section allows for level adjustments on all outputs and Mute and Stop buttons for the panners.
