If you’ve spent any amount of time watching pro mixers demonstrate their craft in video tutorials online you might have felt that the difference between their mixes and yours is down to the fact that they are mixing sessions recorded by pro players in world-class studios and this makes much more difference between your material than theirs that it makes the benefit of mixing techniques harder to judge.
You’d be right. iI does make more difference than any mix decision alone ever could. but that doesn’t mean that good mixing isn’t important. The perfect illustration of this is PureMix’s Pro Member Mix Fix. A scheme where PureMix Pro members can submit their mixes to be used in mix tutorials on PureMix in the same way as the more familiar PureMix content.
The song “Some Summer Day” by Six of One Is one such project and it has a distinctly psychedelic vibe, so it’s fitting that Fab Dupont decides to use what he terms a “trippy delay” on it. In this excerpt from Pro Member Mix Fix: Six Of One - Episode 3: Tweaking The Song Structure, he shows how to set up a delay that’s ducked with sidechain compression.
Pro Member Mix Fix: Six Of One
When the pureMix team heard Adrian Szendel's submission of "Some Summer Day" by his band "Six Of One," they called him right away. Without hesitation, Adrian packed up his car and drove from Cleveland, Ohio, to New York overnight and arrived at Flux Studios the next day to be a part of the shoot!
The track has some new challenges. It was built from a song idea from Adrian's writing partner, Tim DeHuff. That song idea that sparked "Some Summer Day" happens to be one mono track, containing drums, tabla, bass guitar, and electric guitar!
