Every sound editor and designer has phrases that they dread hearing, “Oh, we’ve got a small fantasy sword fight sequence in this episode of our sitcom”, or, “we’ve added a load of stuff in CGI”. These phrases are usually followed by the phrase, “That won’t be a problem, right?”
As a sound editor and designer who often works on fast-turnaround serial drama and comedy, the rise of easily available visual effects technology has meant that I’m hearing these phrases far more frequently nowadays. It’s usually followed by the grim realisation that you’re going to have to put in a load of overtime. Well, if you have to, why not do it in the comfort of your own home?
