The Voice Memos app that comes free in Apple iOS devices is an extremely popular tool for many songwriters. It’s a quick and easy way to record those all important song ideas or sketches.
While it’s incredibly easy to capture those all important bursts of creativity it isn’t always quite so easy to get those files from your Apple iOS device across to your computer. You can of course email these files but this method takes time so not the obvious first choice.
Hoops Can Impair Creativity
Instead, we will typically plug our devices into our computer, which in most cases launches iTunes that we can use to locate and transfer the files, however, for me iTunes could be friendlier. I seem to get update notices pop up saying iTunes or this device needs updating before I can access our media. I don’t know about you but I find iTunes awkward to navigate, which discourages me from using it… unless I absolutely have to. Of course there’s AirDrop but this never seems to work on my old Mac Pro 5,1 cheese-grater.
The other day when I needed to pull some audio files from my iPad Voice Memo app across to my Mac,rather than go through the update hoops, I Googled to see if there was an alternative app and came across a solution.
I wish I found this app years ago. iMazing is a standalone device management app for macOS, which reads your iOS device displaying the media and content stored on your devices in a straightforward computer operating system file directory style. It’s very powerful. Not only does it bypass iTunes for file transferring tasks but you can also backup devices, reinstall apps you’ve long since binned and check device warranty info.
As more and more of us integrate devices such as iPads into our music production workflows we need to know that if we have used Apple iOS devices for capturing audio in Voice Memos, or used Garageband iOS for producing a song or filmed a video, there is an alternative method to iTunes & AirDrop for accessing and/or transferring our media quickly and without fuss from the iOS domain to our computers.
iMazing is available as a free demo with limited features and transfers. It’s available to purchase for £34.99, which may come across as expensive to some but for it is worth every penny.
