With the primary tracking and recording finished, Paul Drew of Production Expert starts to mix the song “Thought of love” by the Rooftop Renegades. Paul shows how, exclusively using Universal Audio UAD-2 plug-in he is able to turn a well recorded vocal into a top line part that sits well in the track but allows the lyric to shine through.
After first letting you hear the lead vocal Paul breaks down his effects and processing chain to take you through it step by step.
Filters & EQ
Paul starts with a Neve 1081 EQ plug-in and uses this to both high and low pass the lead vocal. Paul also shows how driving the input of these “classic” sounding emulations can give some extra body to the sound of the vocal.
The second stage of the vocal mix is to pull out some unwanted frequencies using the Oxford Dynamic EQ. Paul experiments to pull out 3 frequency bands to make the vocal clearer and cleaner.
Using the Harrison 32C EQ Paul adds some final high end to the vocal to really help it cut through.
To control the dynamic of the lead vocal Paul reaches for the Teletronix LA-2A. It’s an easy plug-in to use and Paul shows you how to roll in the gain reduction and use the input gain to make sure both the input and output are balanced.
Paul uses the Culture Vulture from Thermionic Culture to add some distortion and grit to the lead vocal. He shows how he distorts the lead vocal then uses the plug-ins built in mix control to blend the clean and dirty vocal sounds together to create a vocal sound with bite and attack.
In the 5th video in this series Paul looks at mixing both the acoustic and programmed drums for the track Thought Of Love by The Rooftop Renegades.
