MixChecker Pro from Audified is an update to the previous MixChecker. Like the original MixChecker it's a tool designed to simulate the sound of different playback systems to provide a software alternative to having alternative monitors, "grot boxes", radios, phones and the compulsory mix check in the car (we've all done it...).
Quality Can Go Down, Up Isn't So Easy
I remember the Microphone Modeller plug-in from Antares. This was the first tool like this I'd come across and at the time everyone commented that if it could turn an SM58 into a U87 it would be brilliant but all it could do was turn a U87 into an SM58! In the same way, the assumption for this plug-in is that your studio monitors will be of equal or better quality than the simulations. Unfortunately, I can't run a simulation of a big pair of ATCs through a pair of £200 nearfields and get the sound of the ATCs - Pity...
In the free video tutorial, I demonstrate the use of this plug-in. It sounds convincing and works very well. Having tried this kind of plug-in before I'll come clean and say I'm not a fan of this way of working. However, I've met people who find then genuinely useful so I'll leave the usefulness of the process up to you to decide. The effectiveness of this particular plug-in I can say is very good. The laptop and phone simulations, in particular, are very useful but the biggest impression this plug-in made on me was in some ways it could be subverted and used in ways other than its intended purpose. Watch the video to find out what they are.
