In this in-depth look at the Universal Audio OX - The Amp Top Box for Production Expert, Technical Editor James Ivey, with the support of Universal Audio, takes a deep dive look and listen to this solution, which is both a reactive load box and speaker, mic & room emulation for your electric guitar rig.
OX - The Amp Top Box
Load Box - In OX, Universal Audio has created a host of solutions for both studio and live electric guitar players. First of all, OX is a reactive load box. In short, this means that you can run your super loud 100-watt guitar amp at full tilt to get all that lovely tone without causing you to go deaf or your bandmates wanting to kill you. OX sits between the amp and the speaker cabinet and soaks up (which is why these type of units are often called power soaks) the power output and passes a lower level signal onto the speaker. What you end up with is all the amp tone with none of the blistering volume.
Emulation - The second trick OX has up its electronic sleeve is as a speaker, microphone, emulator and effects unit. You can choose to turn off your real-world speaker cabinet and play through dozens of different cabinets, be those 1x10, 2x12, 4x12 the list goes on. Couple that with 2 microphones per "Rig" then add room mics and master effects and you have thousands of amazing sounding tone options for every style of music.
Almost all the guitar audio you hear in this video is being processed by OX. The only segment where you are hearing the speaker cabinet is clearly indicated.
James takes you on an extended tour of the OX, showing you the way he is using it on this demonstration and lets you see and hear just how versatile the new OX really is. Guitar tone heads, enjoy.
