Groove3 viewer David Zarzecki contacted me with a really nice tip involving Logic and EZ Keys that, with his permission, I’d like to share here.
For those who aren’t familiar with EZ Keys from Toontrack; it is a fantastic piano software instrument. Toontrack offers a variety of acoustic and electronic options. It’s my preferred default autoload piano for sketch pad use because it sounds fantastic, loads quickly, and is relatively light on the CPU.
EZ Keys also has a really interesting songwriting track built in with a variety of both stock and add-on MIDI files in various performance styles that are easily editable to fit user-defined chords. It’s a fantastic feature. It works by dragging and modifying parts brought in from it’s browser to its song track.
But what happens if you want to audition some of the song track with another sound? Maybe one of Logic’s other synths, or another third party instrument. Of course, the song track can be exported from EZ Keys and dragged onto another track. But that can be tedious for quick auditioning of parts that are still in progress.
David has pointed out that activating the Enable MIDI Out function in the EZ Keys menu, along with record enabling other software instrument tracks in Logic, will route the playback of the internal EZ Keys song track to the record enabled instruments.
This is great if, for example, you want to load up a synth sound on another track, and hear the EZ Keys song block you are working on played through it. Hear how it sounds with other sounds without having to export anything. Mute the EZ Keys track to hear the other instruments alone. Or leave EZ Keys unmuted to hear the sounds layered.
So now you don’t have to drag MIDI into Logic every time you want to hear your track played back with another sound.
Here’s a bonus tip from David. If you are using Drummer. Enable the Follow Host button and playback from within Logic. Playback will include not only Drummer but also the internal EZ Keys song track from whichever instruments are unmuted and record enabled.
