A recent post by my colleague Julian Rodgers at Production Expert explored the variations in feel available with the UJAM Solid virtual instrument. Many of you may not be aware, but Logic’s Drummer has the same functionality built right into it under the hood.
The idea of “push” and “pull” with regards to pop based drum grooves refers to playing slightly ahead or behind the beat, in order to impart a slightly different feel to the music. Playing ahead of the beat (usually refers to the snare drum backbeat) generally gives the song a bit more of a driving aggressive feeling. Playing behind the beat, depending on the style of music, can be great for a laid back relaxed kind of feel. Or, if other instruments are playing ahead of the beat, it can create a nice rhythmic tension that adds to the groove by creating a feeling of holding things back from becoming too exciting. This underlines the excitement!
To get to Logic’s push/pull knob, click on the Details button at the bottom right of the Drummer interface. Experiment with the feel knob to explore the effect this has on the overall groove of the underlying music.
