Sound Designer and Supervisor Jonah Guelzo has produced an interesting Behind-The-Scenes interview series with Filmmaking Industry Professionals, covering all aspects of Filmmaking from sound, to picture and editing.
In this episode, Jonah speaks with Academy Award Winning, Supervising Sound Editor, Lon Bender (The Revenant, The Hunger Games, Braveheart) about founding Post-Production audio company Soundelux in 1982 and continuing his passion for film sound on modern day classic feature films.
Lon Bender is a supervising sound editor and has been recognised for numerous other industry awards as well, winning the Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing for his work on Braveheart in 1995.
Lon is also an inventor and founder of several early-stage ventures, including companies that develop devices, technologies, resources, and service solutions designed to assist individuals living with the effects of hearing loss.
Lon grew up in North Hollywood, California attending Oakwood School, known for its progressive educational approach of process over product. While at the school, Lon became very engaged in the theatre arts program, both as an actor and handling sound for many school productions. In 1982, he teamed with Wylie Stateman to form Soundelux Entertainment Group. Bender and Statement explored numerous production, post-production and manufacturing opportunities.
In 2006, Bender returned exclusively to his creative roots, which started with the creation of a fully cinematic soundscape for the Broadway production of Tarzan.
In 2014 the Soundelux co-founder left to become the twelfth artist to join Formosa Group since the company was launched in 2013 and began luring talent. At the time Lon explained...
I think the strongest draw for me to Formosa is the community of creative people, both supervisors and editors as well as support staff. I think they have a community of people that are all engaged together.
Lon also explained his decision to leave Soundelux...
It was a long process of making a decision to leave and start a new phase in my professional life. I felt like that company that was Soundelux had built itself to a pinnacle and to its highest level, and I was very happy to be a part of that, and I wanted to do a similar thing and contribute my expertise to something new and start to build something new again.
