The introduction of the two new track and stem formats - with height channels - 7.0.2 and 7.1.2 in Pro Tools 12.8HD to support Dolby Atmos integration will require new versions of plug-ins as well as opportunities for plug-in developers to create new plug-ins to help with immersive sound workflows in Pro Tools.
Avid has now released Pro Tools 12.8HD with Dolby Atmos integration that they announced at Avid Connect on the run up to NAB 2017 in Las Vegas. Everything in this story is for Pro Tools 12HD users owners unless otherwise stated. The highlights of the Pro Tools 12.8 release is support for 7.0.2 and 7.1.2 track and stem formats, one universal panner module for both stem and Dolby metadata panning, automated routing between stem and objects, support for the ADM BWAV file format making re-purposing of immersive content much easier and support for Pro Tools sessions on the Avid NEXIS storage systems.

DTS, who are now a wholly owned subsidiary of Xperi Corporation have announced the DTS:X Creator Suite, hot on the heels of the Avid Dolby Atmos integration and the new Dolby Atmos Suites. The DTS:X Creator Suite is designed to enable users to mix and deliver immersive, interactive, object-based DTS audio content to a wide variety of media formats and services. DTS claim that unlike other immersive, object-based production tools, the DTS:X Creator Suite is a software solution with no extraneous hardware requirements.
Following on from Avid's announcement on Dolby Atmos Integration In Pro Tools HD we have some more information about the tools Dolby are going to be offering to facilitate this from their end including details of the software render unit. They are releasing two software bundles, the Dolby Atmos Production Suite and Mastering Suite.
Avid are announcing at Avid Connect on the run up to NAB 2017 in Las Vegas that Pro Tools HD will be able to support and mix natively in the 10 channel Dolby Atmos format 7.1.2 with Avid promoting this as the only DAW to natively support Dolby Atmos in the box.
