We always welcome new AoIP products and while there have been countless Dante products released over the last couple of years, developments in the area of AVB have been rather slower. One thing about this release which caught our attention was a statement about compatibility with other AVB systems, an area where AVB doesn't have the same guaranteed compatibility as some alternative AoIP solutions.
Audinate, the makers of Dante have announced a line of miniature Dante adapters. These tiny adapters look like they have reduced a network node to its bare minimum with a RJ45 at one end and breakout connectors on short tails at the other. These adapter will offer a way to integrate existing, non-Dante hardware into a Dante network.
Here's an interesting idea from DiGiGrid about how to use their Soundgrid Diglink interfaces to use old or second hand Digilink equipped Avid I/O boxes with any DAW you like. Particularly interesting considering how cheap these boxes are second hand.
Over the Christmas period, each team member is sharing their product of the year. For Julian Rodgers it is DiGiGrid AoIP hardware.
Mention the word Dante in the wrong circles and many people think of a bad Pierce Brosnan movie from the late 90s. However, in the high tech audio world, we now think of Audinate's Dante Audio Over IP solution and maybe the Focusrite RedNet range of high-end interfaces. Enter the new Tascam ML-16D and ML-32D Analogue to Dante converters with either 16 or 32 channels of A-D and D-A conversion respectively at up to 96KHz sample rate.
In the Pro Tools Expert 2017 Christmas Competition we offered the chance of winning a copy of Source Elements Source Connect Standard Software, worth $599, as one of 31 great prizes on offer worth over $16,000 in total. We can announce that Lee Riley is the lucky winner.
AoIP promises to change the audio world. However when trying to change the world, are there any lessons we can learn from the people whose job it is to try to do it for real? Julian examines the parallels.
Presonus have announced the StudioLive Series III rack mixers which can serve as simple AVB stage boxes, combination stage boxes and monitor mixers, or powerful standalone mixers. These AVB networkable stage box/mixers would be very capable additions to a studio, offering quality preamps and Fat Channel processing for low-latency recording with or without effects. You also get the Studio Magic Plug-in Suite for Mac and Windows, which includes seven popular plug-ins in AAX format.
The team at Focusrite are very pleased to announce the new RedNet X2P, which they describe as a small, compact and robust 2x2 Dante audio interface. Could this be the Dante equipped box we have all been waiting for? Now there is no need to move 8 or 16 channels of I/O to your performer's location when all they are recording is a vocal on a single mic with a single set of headphones.
Updated - Since publishing, Focusrite have have announced the Red16 and Rednet XP2 which are now included in this round up.
Presonus, the makers of Studio One have announced the SW5E AVB Switch.
The SW5E is a 5 port Ethernet switch which features 4 PoE ports and an internal power supply with a built-in IEC inlet. All ports feature rugged Ethercon connectors. In combination with the Presonus StudioLive RML-series rack mixer or StudioLive CS18AI control surface the SW5E enables interconnection of Presonus or non Presonus AVB equipment
I wrote a primer on AES67 some time ago AES67 - What Is It And Why Should you Care? and as a first place to go to orient yourself this would be a good place to start. However for some more detail in collaboration with the Broadcast Bridge, friend of the blog Andreas Hildebrand from ALC NetworX has written a 3 part guide to AES67, Broadcast Bridge have published part 1 with parts 2 and 3 to follow very soon.
Both Dante Via and Dante Virtual Soundcard are essential tools in Dante environments and if you want to get started with Dante then Audinate offer a bundle option of a license for Via and DVS for a combined price of $59.95 USD, a saving of 25% on the price of separate licenses.
In this excellent free video tutorial from Yamaha Commercial Audio, Patrick Killianey explains how domain names get resolved to IP addresses through the Domain Name Service or DNS. This video starts with a very accessible overview of what DNS is and then delves deeper in to exactly it works. To make it more digestible I have made notes on the content with timings.
Sometimes overlooked SoundGrid is an AoIP technology which offers audio transport over standard gigabit networks and real time audio processing on Intel CPUs, all with deterministic latency. This audio processing capability is a key difference between SoundGrid and the other AoIP technologies discussed in these spotlight articles and is possibly a reason why it is perhaps less well understood than some of the other contenders. Pro Tools Expert AoIP specialist Julian Rodgers takes a closer look...
