What Is Ambisonics?
Ambisonics is a system for capturing or representing a spherical sound field using regular audio channels. It's the audio format commonly used for Facebook 360 and YouTube 360 videos and VR headsets like the Oculus Rift. It's also very useful for manipulating audio and mixing for any immersive or binaural delivery format.

With the growth of immersive formats like Dolby Atmos and Auro 3D, the channel format limit in Pro Tools HD of 7.1 is now sadly lacking. We need at least 9.1 for Dolby Atmos and 11.1 for Auro 3D but with the explosion of virtual reality and the rebirth of Ambisonics formats to support VR we need these VR formats included as soon as possible.
