In this free video tutorial Pro Tools Expert team member Julian Rodgers demonstrates the new track comping features introduced in Pro Tools 2018. While playlist view offered an excellent overview of alternate takes, live previewing of alternate takes wasn't easy and when working on multiple grouped tracks such as drum kits or large groups of BVs, the number of tracks and alternative playlists quickly became overwhelming.
The new comping features allow easy comping from waveform view.
The first new feature of this new workflow is the target playlist. While by default the main playlist is designated as the target playlist, any of the alternative takes can be designated the target using the new blue target buttons visible in playlist view or using the shortcut Cmd+Shift+right arrow (Control+Shift+right arrow on PC). The Target Playlist is the playlist to which you are comping.
Copy/Move To Target Playlist
Switching between playlists during playback is straightforward using shortcuts.
- Step through Playlists - Shift+Up/Down Arrow
- Show Target Playlist - Shift+Right Arrow
- Toggle current/previous playlist - Shift+Left Arrow
Copy/Move to Target Playlist
Copying or moving to the target playlist can be done from the Edit menu, by right-clicking or using the following shortcuts:
- Copy to Target Playlist - Option+Shift+Up Arrow or Control/Start+Option/Alt+V
- Move to Target Playlist - Option/Alt+Shift+T
The shortcut for Move to Target Playlist replaces the earlier Option+Shift+M shortcut from earlier versions of Pro Tools.
