I'm a 35 year old father of a beautiful one year old son and married to a sweet and supporting wife. As a 16 year old old-school hardcore guitar player I got to record my first band demo on a 4 track Tascam recorded in a spare room of a youth centre in my area.
That demo lead us to a record deal and got me in the "Studio 195" in the Netherlands. That was my first experience with a big console and some genuine ADAT recorders that had the more advanced option to fail on us several times mid session. Nevertheless, this was the moment I got interested in recording and mixing. Unfortunately, in the late nineties meant needing a lot of cash for even a simple setup. So, it turned out to be a lot cheaper to just write a lot of albums with different bands and record as much as possible.
Being a Cubase LE user since early 2000, it came with very cheap interfaces you know, and I never felt quite happy with the workflow and recording & mixing seemed complicated. Eventually, during the Pro Tools 7 LE era, I made the switch to Pro Tools. Simply because by that time, all the recording studios I visited with my bands used HD or even older MIX systems of Pro Tools. While sitting in the control room, I carefully watched what those pro's were doing and learned from there.
Fast forward to today, I run a small mixing and location recording business next to my day job as a Project Manager. So my music is limited to mostly nights and weekends. I somehow have specialised in bands, because let's be honest, nothing is more exciting than mixing a 20 track drum take. I do a lot of remixing of tracks recorded with other engineers, but also offer recording sessions though not having my own big tracking room I go to available studios for those sessions.
I was surprised to hear about my nomination and feel very honoured and grateful to receive this award simply because I join in on discussions about the topics that interest me the most. Pro Tools Expert is my main platform for information about Pro Tools and mixing, so thanks for keeping this amazing piece of information going!
I would love to try out the Sonnox EQ as I'm hearing a lot of positive things about it but haven't been able to use it.
Jared Pennock - Sonnox Community Award Winner For May 2016
Hello fellow Community Members, I am a Producer/Engineer/Mixer located in Gainesville, Florida, USA. I've been involved in music for nearly 20 years, and without it, I'm sure I would've gone insane long ago.
Like all of us, I'm sure I have a small gear addiction, but it's all for the music. There's no feeling better than seeing the look on someone's face when you've helped bring their art into the real world.
A huge thank you to the Pro Tools Expert Team and Community for everything you guys do. This really feels like a big family and I'm glad to be part of it.
My Sonnox plug-in choice is the SuprEsser, due to my endless quest to properly and cleanly tame esses and cymbal wash. I've had my eye on this guy for some time now.
I look forward to continuing to give back to the Expert Community. Again, thank you all for everything.
Grant Hall - Sonnox Community Award Winner For June 2016
It has been quoted by many people from more populated parts of the world that, 'nothing exciting happens in Saskatchewan'...or, better quoted: 'Saskatchew 'what?!' Those people have never read the liner notes on R. Kelly & Snoopdogg's rap album, sold in stores everywhere. Those people are not reclusive geniuses in the music industry such as the infamous 'Mutt Lange & TChad Blake who know exactly who Grant Hall is, where Touchwood Studios is located and where this ingenious advanced world market studio resides; Regina, Saskatchewan.
I founded and established Touchwood studios in 1985 and has been running solid ever since, with an amazing collection of vintage microphones and analog outboard as well as modern classic equipment.
Touchwood Studios is also a world wide direct music content supplier for the Apple iTunes Music Store as a record label in the year 2006. We have helped developed artists onto the international stage like Into Eternity and The Western Senators. Touchwood Studios has even had a US Grammy Nomination for our past work.
I would like the Inflator - I have seen the Inflator in action at a friend's studio. This is truly an amazing dynamics plug-ins on drums and guitars and it provides an amazing ability to create an extreme limiting without the artifacts of a typical limiter. As well as having precise control over every aspect on dynamics shaping of the audio you are processing. The Inflator is extremely versatile as well and can be used on almost any type of instrument or voice.
What Is The Sonnox Community Award?
As we have said on many occasions we aren’t the only Pro Tools Experts, it works best when we pull together as a community to help each other when and where we can. There are plenty of places on the web for trolls and negativity, but many of our members work hard to create a positive and supportive community of Pro Tools Experts and we think that kind of attitude should be recognised and encouraged. With all of that in mind we are rewarding those in the community who go the extra mile to help others.
Each month we award the Community Member Of The Month Award sponsored by Sonnox. This award goes to the individual, who in the judges opinion, made an ongoing contribution to the Pro Tools Expert community.
