We all love holidays, but some people find themselves with spare time, so here are five things to do that you may have been putting off for weeks, months, years - they could save you time later!
Tidy Up Your Computer
You’ll be amazed how much stuff there is on your computer that either needs moving somewhere else or trashing. It could be anything from sessions, samples or lyrics. You’ll be amazed what you can do in 30 minutes to get all of this stuff in order. To keep my desktop tidy I have a folder called ‘To Tidy’ then when I’m quiet (rarely) then I sort them all out.
You must think we have shares in a Back-Up company, we talk about it so much. However the time when most people think about backing up their files is after a hard drive crash - which is as dumb as putting on a seatbelt after you’ve hit a tree in you car. Back up - both to real and cloud based places. Get a cloud based account with a brand like Dropbox to use for your Pro Tools sessions to keep a secondary cloud based copy of your real back-ups.
In the busy moments of a studio we all do dumb things, like creating entire Pro Tools sessions with all the tracks called ‘Audio’… you’ll go to hell for that. If not in reality, trying to figure out a session like that is hell! Don’t stop at your Pro Tools sessions, go through your whole computer and create logical folder systems for all your Sessions, Songs, Samples, Lyrics. Colour coding can help as well, I use colour coding my plug-in folders to show which have been tested not to crash Pro Tools and which do and need updating. Also go through you cables and patchbays and make sure you have got these all labelled so you don’t spend minutes or even hours trying to figure out why your mic isn’t working only to find the wrong lead plugged in.
Learn Something New
You know that plug-in you don’t understand, or that shortcut you need to learn, or dithering, or gain staging? We all have so much to learn. This is the thing I do most when I have spare time. I sit down and watch a few videos, read some manuals, Google some stuff I don’t quite understand and just drink it all up. Check out our premium video platform with over 900 tutorials or our free tutorials page, or head over to our friends at Groove3 and pureMix.
This may well be the best piece I can give to many of you reading this article. You may not be religious, but that doesn’t mean everything that they believe in is rubbish. I am a firm believer in the principle of a sabbath. A time when I turn off everything including my phone, email, even Facebook and walk away from my work to spend time with my family and friends. If you feel like you’ve got nothing creative left to give, that might be because you haven’t. Creativity is an outflow of the stuff we take in, so if you are worn out and dried out then stop and just rejuvenate those creative batteries. Ironically taking time to do this now may save you years in the long run - and on that note… I’m off now!
