Following on from part 1, part 2 & part 3, I am going to take a look at the next two sound effect collections from Rabbit Ears Audio. Bells and Brooks, Streams and Waterfalls….
Bronze, brass, chrome, gold, stainless steel, and steel are just some of the materials that forged this library. They spent a day at one of the few remaining bell foundries in the United States and rang bells until their ears nearly fell off. They hit them with mallets, clappers, and shook them with bare hands. They also spent time on an old barge and percussion rental facility for rare and unusual bells.
Each bell was recorded from multiple perspectives … if you need a heavy attack or just a warm roomy bell toll … they’ve got it.
One of the problems with bell related sound effects is that there rarely is a good tail where the ring completely dies away to silence. Michael has taken great care and each hit is allowed to die away completely. But because the bell responds differently to multiple strikes in quick succession he has included tracks with those as well.
The range is very broad from 16” nautical bells down to 4” bells, then gongs through to cowbells, all meticulously recorded. The only thing that wasn’t in this collection were some very big bells with lots of low resonances. Maybe for another collection Michael?

REA007 Brooks, Streams and Waterfalls
With REA003 - Hydrophonics, Michael gave us an underwater library, now we have the above water collection. REA 007 is a celebration of moving water in nature. From small trickles to rushing torrents, Brooks Streams Waterfalls is for those who need a variety of water movement in their library. Locations were chosen based on their variety of elements. Water sounds at it’s best when it has something to pass through that changes its flow. The brooks and streams in this collection feature currents that are shaped by rocks, boulders, and downed trees. The waterfalls chosen range from small falls fed by babbling mountain brooks to large rushing waterfalls fed by strong relentless currents.
Michael has concentrated on providing longer tracks from a variety of perspectives and the smaller streams and brooks are full of character. The waterfalls are less spectacular, not because of Michael’s skill as a sound recordist but because the larger the waterfall the closer the sound becomes pink noise. However to contract this, He has included a number of recording downstream from a large waterfall which include the closer sounds of water flowing through rocks as well as the waterfall in the distance.
