422 has installed two Pro Tools HDX systems each with an Avid Pro Tools S6 M10 16-fader control surface from Mediaspec UK.
The take up of the Pro Tools S6 modular control surface from Avid by leading sound companies, music studios and post production houses continues to increase throughout Europe.
Post-production house Goldcrest Post Production has chosen an Avid Pro Tools S6 control surface for its newly-opened Dean Street Theatre 1, a purpose-built Dolby Atmos mixing theatre based in central London. Goldcrest’s Soho facilities are now home to three Pro Tools S6 control surfaces that have been supplied by Scrub, a division of HHB Communications.
Scrub, the post-focused subsidiary of HHB Communications, supplied the audio equipment for a new, multi-theatre Deluxe Media Audio facility in Perivale, north-west London, including a 10 foot wide Avid S6 control surface.
As part of their recent rebrand, Halo Post wanted to add a versatile new sound studio that would be equally at home handling TV and film projects. After demoing different systems at Jigsaw24's Golden Square facility, Halo and Jigsaw worked together to put together a Pro Tools S6-based system with DAD monitoring control and support for 7.1 film mixing.
Since Jigsaw24's appointment as an Avid Elite Reseller for Audio in July 2015, they have been quietly succesful in supplying Avid Pro Tools S6 control surfaces. They have installed them in a number of the UK’s premier audio production facilities, including: Abbey Road Institute, Airborn Productions, Evolutions, Halo Post, Splice Post and Sound24.

A recent expansion saw Smart Post Sound add two new sound stages and no less than four brand new Avid S6 control surfaces to its facilities.
Our friends at RSPE Audio Solutions recently supplied Sony Pictures Post Production Services with the largest Avid S6 control surface installed anywhere to date. Installed in the 158-seat Anthony Quinn Theatre, the dual-operator, 22-foot long control surface features 48 faders in each section, along with 12 meter displays, two sets of dual joysticks and two bias panels. The control surface is supported by four Pro Tools HDX2 players and two Pro Tools HDX recorders and is connected via high-speed Ethernet to editorial rooms and other facilities on the Sony Pictures lot.
We asked Tom McCarthy who is Executive Vice President at Sony Pictures Post Production Services what he thought about the Avid S6. "The S6 is a very powerful and intuitive system. It allows mixers to work more efficiently and fluidly. Most importantly, it enhances their ability to work creatively with sound and build groundbreaking soundtracks. Our artists are very excited to have access to this new tool".
Re-Recording Mixer Steve Pederson and Supervising Sound Editor Steven Ticknor were the first to mix on the new console, mixing sound for the Screen Gems thriller, When the Bough Breaks. “What I enjoyed most were the layout functions of the S6, which are like a hybrid of memory locations and window configurations that you find in Pro Tools but much more powerful, Avid has listened to mixers and produced an integrated mixing and editing tool.”
What Steve Pederson likes best is the immediate visual feedback provided by the console’s metering displays. “Avid has created a board that conforms to the emerging workflow of automated mixing in the Pro Tools session—yet it has done so in a powerful, ‘retro’ style console. It’s going to be great!”

Avid S6 Coming Of Age In Film Post Production?
Although this isn't the first dual operator Avid S6 to be installed, it is currently the largest. It marks the coming of age of control surfaces in the block buster movie workflow. RSPE Audio Solutions recently supplied Azusa Pacific University with a new Avid S6 Control Surface for use in their Film/TV program. The Avid S6 is now the nerve centre of their 7.1 DTS HD dub stage, which was a 78-seat theatre and screening room that has now been converted into a 7.1 surround sound mix room.

Perhaps best described as the ‘mother of all control surfaces’ Avid announce the S6 modular mixing console, which although available in pre-configured options, has almost limitless configurations. In their own words Avid have ‘leveraged the best of the ICON and System 5 product families in a revolutionary new modular design’.
The new Avid S6 is built around 2 core frames, the S6 M40 allowing for up to 41 modules and the smaller S6 M10 allowing for up to 9 modules. The larger S6 M40 is aimed at high-end professionals and facilities that need great scalability and customization with the smaller S6 M10 aimed at smaller- to mid-size facilities, such as producers.
Having read through the concept and specs in detail and seeing the almost limitless potential of the modular design, this is kind of ‘build-a-bear’ for the audio professional, although granted it may not be as cute and somewhat more costly, the S6 is far more sexy and impressive.
Master modules are the central hubs of your S6 surface. All surfaces must include a main engine, which provides touchscreen access and control; you have a choice between two—S6 M40 or S6 M10. The S6 Automation Module complements both, providing controls for transport, automation, and more. Here’s a closer look at these modules. Both feature a tilting 12.1-inch multipoint touchscreen, eight adjacent rotary encoders, and dedicated knobs and keys for monitoring and global control, enabling you to view, access, and edit different aspects of your mix—such as tracks, processing, and metering—without mousing through menus.
