I have been lucky enough to have loan of the Soyuz SU-019 since just after the NAMM show back in January 2017. Many of you will have heard me use it as it is the mic I have been using to record my voice for the Pro Tools Expert podcast ever since. The SU-019 is a large diaphragm FET condenser microphone. The FET or Field Effect Transistor is placed in the mics internal circuit to produce a richer tone. read on to see what I think about it...
In a recent article, I wrote about making the client approvals process as straightforward and effective as possible. Since writing that article I was introduced to Frame.io 2, a platform which sells itself as Video Collaboration Software - if you are thinking I don't make videos so I'll not read any further then I urge to read on.
The 2016 Stereo Room reverb is a straight forward room simulator plug-in that I feel produces very transparent room like ambiences. The front to rear positioning dial is the standout control for me as it helped me to sit several tracks in a mix in a subtle three dimensional way.
The BeatBox Anthology 2 GUI throws away the drum machine history books meaning users don't have to be vintage drum machine aficionados in order to get great sounding electronic drums in their mixes.
In this video for Pro Tools Expert, Technical Editor James Ivey takes a look at the new Virtual Tube Collection (VTC) by Slate Digital. Steven at the team at Slate have collected together some of the finest valve (Tube) gear and worked there magic to create 3 very subtle but very useful additions to the Slate Virtual Mix Rack (VMR) family.
I am going to start this review/how-to/case study with a simple statement of fact. I am not a qualified acoustician. Nore am I into acoustical number crunching of any kind. This entire experiment was based on a reasonable working knowledge of room acoustics and good old common sense. So let's begin.
The latest round of Mac Books Pros in late 2016 brought us yet another connection format, Thunderbolt 3, not at this stage to be confused with USB-C (we can deal with that in another article). So how are we going to hook up our Thunderbolt monitors, drives and audio interfaces to this new format? The folks at OWC might just have the answer in the form of the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock.
Pro Tools Expert Audio over IP specialist Julian Rodgers looks at the Focusrite AM2 headphone amplifier. Whether as part of a RedNet system or as a high quality endpoint in a mixed Dante system simple things, if they are worth doing, are worth doing well.
The Focusrite Red 4Pre launched in March 2016 and I did 3 separate reviews on it. In this review I cover the similarities and differences between the Red 4 and Red 8Pre and also share how I am using it in my everyday work.
Waves have produced a very natural sounding grand piano instrument in Grand Rhapsody. The control set offers quite a lot of scope for producing a variety of standard and creative piano tones - for the money you are not going to find a better piano virtual instrument on the market.
Silk is the fourth Virtual Guitarist instrument from UJAM. Like the other three (Iron, Amber, and Sparkle), Silk is optimised for one purpose. To produce great-sounding guitar tracks with minimum fuss. The interface is intuitive, and it is a great songwriting tool that allows you to generate parts for the ideas you are working on simply and efficiently.
In this video review for Pro Tools Expert, Technical Editor James Ivey takes a look at a new software application called PatchCAD.
PatchCAD is a simple PC only (at this time) application that makes it quick and easy to label your patchbays to make you studio look professional down to the last detail.
Pro Tools Expert Team member Julian Rodgers looks at the LX480 Reverb from Relab, this plugin recreates the iconic Lexicon 480L reverb, one of the few pieces of digital hardware to have achieved the desirable vintage status usually reserved for analogue hardware.
Featuring the same algorithms as the 480L, including the famous Ambience and Random Hall algorithms, this plugin adds some instant 80s to whatever audio you choose to pass through it. It can do subtle (though that's not something I associate with the 80s...) and in this review Julian visits some of the "Greatest Hits" of the Lexicon sound.
In this video review for Pro Tools Expert, Technical Editor James Ivey takes a look at one of the new Moog filters by Universal Audio for the UAD-2 DSP platform. James tries the Moog Multimode Filter on Bass, Guitars and Drums in a 70's funk style track to see just how fat and funky he can get.
Pro Tools Expert Post Production Specialist Alan Sallabank reviews the RØDE smartLav+ Lavalier microphone system, and sees if such a reasonable budget solution can deliver a professional result.
