A Conversation With Wilfried Van Baelen - No Compromise Studio Owner & Creator Of The Auro 3D Immersive Format
Mike sat down with the creator of the Auro 3D format Wilfried Van Baelen and over just short of 2 hours we discussed how he came into sound as a performer first, then a producer, how he built his first studio in an unused chicken coup.
We moved on to discuss the design and building of his no compromise Galaxy Studios with 100dB isolation between adjacent studios. The development of mixing in 5.1 and stereo on the same console, first on a digital console and then on an analog desk.
We explored how Wilfried discovered height in sound which led him to develop the Auro 3D format, consider how we perceive the world around us and how that impacts on the design to produce as natural reproduction system as possible and the benefits of recording natively in Auro 3D to improve the immersive experience.
We chatted about the David Goliath relationship with Dolby and how Auro 3D is being taken up in the film and cinema worlds as well as games.
We covered a lot of ground in this 112 minute conversation and if you are exploring or working in 3d immersive sound this is an essential listen. Even if you aren’t in the 3D audio world there is loads of interesting stories about no compromise studio design, and how we listen and perceive the world around us.
Take a look at the images below to see how the studio was built and more….
Our friends at Nugen Audio will be celebrating 10 years of service to the broadcast community at IBC2014, demonstrating their latest innovations in their family of post-production and broadcast audio tools including key new standards-compliant technologies that further ease the burden of loudness compliance. Jon Schorah, Founder and Creative Director told us…
This year at IBC, attendees will see why NUGEN Audio has become the go-to company for loudness management and compliance. We will also be demonstrating how NUGEN Audio is broadening its toolset to address other audio requirements, such as dynamics, upmix, and support for the DPP standard. We’ve taken the lead on addressing dynamic content adaptations with our new DynApt algorithm to expand content repurposing. We’re also proud of our participation in the DPP, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to supporting the very latest developments in loudness compliance and management. Finally, for the first time, we’ll be showcasing some of our upcoming innovations in upmix technology.
NUGEN Audio’s LMB is an offline file-based loudness analysis and correction program for high throughput applications. A new update to LMB’s MXF file-handling option introduces DPP AS-11 compatibility. NUGEN Audio is a participant in the DPP compliance program, an initiative founded by U.K. public service broadcasters to help speed the transition to fully digital production and distribution for television. As a member of the AS-11 DPP compliance and certification program, NUGEN Audio is helping to develop quality assurance criteria for the AS-11 DPP specification for digital file formats. Making its IBC debut, the MXF file-handling option introduces native MXF audio-handling that enables LMB to perform automated analysis and correction of audio within an MXF container while preserving all other data within the file.
Everyone Adopt The DPP Specifications
We recommend that all broadcasters look at the excellent work the Digital Production Partnership has undertaken to take the various standards and produce a real world set of delivery specifications for all the UK broadcasters. It will make our lives in UK based post production so much easier to be able to provide the same output for all broadcasters, so please broadcasters in other territories take a look at what the DDP has done in the UK and adopt it and make everyone’s lives even easier.

Auro 3D inventor Wilfried Van Baelen takes us on a tour of Galaxy Studios and explains the advantages of his new immersive surround sound format. Although it is coming from the designer and shows the studio complex he built, he covers some very interesting issues regarding immersive sound and what works and doesn’t work.
Auro 3D is obviously pitching up against Dolby Atmos, but there is discussion as to what the sound format should be to go with 4K video and the 9.1 format is getting some interest. Its a neat solution because it is the conventional 5.1 format, with a quad system higher up for the height information.
There is a debate as to whether this format is only for big studios and big films or whether it can be scaled down to the small screen or even the mobile platform. What do you think? Where is 3D sound going? Do you think that 9.1 will take off?
What about encoded headphone based delivery? I tried the DTS system when I was at NAB last year and took my headphones off because I thought they had left the speakers on, which they hadn’t so with that short demo I was fooled with audio coming from behind listening to just a pair of headphones.
Audiotech Digital Ltd has announced today the release of the new Penteo 4 Pro plug-in that discretely converts stereo to 5.1, offering exacting control over sound image placement to create high-quality, sonic-free and natural-sounding surround.
Check out Mike’s detailed Show & Tell Video Review and find out why he likes this so much and Penteo 4 Pro Surround is his ‘go to’ upmxing plug-in and why he has awarded it Editors Choice.
Penteo 4 Pro Deal Has Finished
We are sorry but the deal finished in mid April 2014. You can buy the plug-in direct from the guys at Audiotech Digital Ltd for $999.
Penteo 4 Pro is 100-percent ITU down-mix compatible to the original stereo. The plug-in features an intuitive visual interface modeled after vintage gear, and offers six automated preset modes as well as advanced manual controls for fine- tuning.
Native AAX64 Support For Pro Tools 11
Penteo 4 Pro now natively supports Avid Audio eXtension (AAX) for true 64 bit processing. As a result, Penteo 4 Pro AAX64 uses 52% less CPU processing power thereby allowing a sound designer more flexibility to simultaneously use more tracks in a mix than ever before.
- Touch Screen Controls – In addition to mouse operated controls, Penteo 4 Pro is the first up-mixer to support multi-touch controls. Mixing is not a linear, sequential process — Penteo’s unique multi-touch interface allows a sound designer to control more than one Penteo feature at once, thereby creating a natural mixing experience through simple hand contact. Penteo 4 Pro is the world’s first multi-touch plug-in designed for use with the Raven MTX Surround console.
- Pro Tools Automation Keyboard Shortcuts for all parameters - Quickly add and select parameters for automation using standard control/alt/cmd shortcuts.
- Usage Preferences – With choice of circular or vertical knob drag usage options, a sound designer can select the most natural feeling knob movement for mouse or multi-touch.
- New bypass channel routing - Stereo bypass channels now routes to the ProTools channel output standard.
The Anymix Pro plug-in is described by Iosono as “the surround maker” and actually it isn’t an unreasonable description. In the video above, Mike demonstrates how it is a Surround panner that can pan outside of the surround field with loudness and EQ compensation built in. It is also a Surround Upmix enabling you to produce surround capable and downmix friendly upmixes of stereo content. Please note what you are listening to in the video above is a downmix of the surround output.
The plug-in comes with a broad selection of up and downmix preferences tailored to be used in post-production, broadcast, music and game sound design. Anymix doesn’t only redistribute audio material to a certain output configuration, but gives you full control over important parameters, turning the mono or stereo mix into an ultra-realistic surround scenario.
The plug-in can be used to convert any input setup from mono to 8.1 to any output format from stereo to 8.1. In addition, the included surround panning mode offers deep control of channel positioning within the surround field. Whether it is static panning, an individual motion automation or pure upmix processing – Anymix is the great tool.
They started their appeal on November 1st 2013 and when we posted the story yesterday they only had 16 hours to go. At that point they had raised $20,000 but were still $5,000 short and were not optimisitc of reaching of their target.
15 hours to go for the brahma microphone kickstarter project to end, we are at 20000 dollars so we will probably fall short.
Within 8 hours of us posting the story they had reached reached their target and so could progress and in fact at the end they had $28,414 pledged.
They were delighted with the response and tweeted back to Mike….
Thank you to everyone who reached out and helped this small team of entrepeneurs reach their target. We are hoping to review the Brahma microphone as soon as they can get one to us.
Would you like to have a low cost ambisonics mic? If so, you might want to consider signing up to this Kickstarter project for a Brahma Ambisonics mic, but hurry as there isn’t much time as they need $25,000.
Until now ambisonics microphones have been very expensive but if this kickstart project is successful then then it will be possible to get an ambisonics microphone for as little as $649.
Please note - we haven’t tried one of these microphones yet, so cannot vouch for the quality.
