We have been featuring tips in audio post production in Pro Tools from Marcelo Cyro from the Oscar nominated animation - The Boy And The World and more recently other films. In this article Marcelo is going to explore how to use multiple delay effects. Over to you Marcelo...
Delay forms the basis for a wide range of effects, with which you can create depth, and as well as some interesting illusions for your viewer. With multiple delays you can create sound fields of such density that they start to take on some of the qualities we'd more usually associate with reverb. This is something that I really like is to use, especially in surround to create a bigger space.
Another great tip is use multiple delays with a slight different parameters and configure your audio routing so that one delay will modulate the other.
In this example from the film Paratodos directed by Marcelo Mesquita I have used 3 instances of Waves H-Delay.
- Delay 1 - An 1/8th note delay with a medium feedback and some analog distortion.
- Delay 2 - Faster delay with a lot feedback with high pass & low pass filtering together with lo-fi distortion.
- Delay 3 - An 1/8 note delay with lo-fi distortion and a send to delay 2.
Try experimenting with automating different delays on different words. For me it gives an extra level of sophistication. You can see and hear how it sounds and how I do this in the video above.
