Naming our tracks in Pro Tools is a important process. It takes very little effort and is integral to navigating a session... yet many of us neglect to do it.
I was producing and recording a large song the other day with a songwriter, it was a busy day of tracking. At the end of the session I noticed I had not named a single track. The whole session was labeled automatically "Audio 1" to "Audio 40". After "having strong words with myself" I started to go through the session naming each track correctly ready for the next session. Later that evening I was bothered by my slap dash session management and thought to why I didn't give it enough care.
I believe that on that day I was really into the song and the vibe from the songwriter. I remember feeling as though the arrangement and the song were so good that I just simply had to get the music moving quickly. Inspiration took took over. The song just took us both on a journey of creativity and excitement. I think that the creativity in the right side of my brain just completely dominated the logic and reasoning in the left side that day.
I've come away from this with a question for you all. Now be honest:
Do you name your tracks when in the early recording/tracking stages?
Let's get a good discussion going.
