Cool Russ. Some more tutorials involving busses would be good. Still bit of a mystery to me!

I'm sorry to say, this is not the way it works on most dance tracks. What you are showing is the exact opposite of what you hear on most dance tracks.

On dance tracks like "call on me" with eric prydz the synths ducks for the kick drum, not between the kicks. With the gate effect that you've shown now, the synths are the loudest at the same time that the kick plays. The opposite effect is what is desired: the synths ducks when the kick comes in and are the loudest between the kicks.

This effect can be achieved by using a compressor instead of a expander/gate. The same side chain routine can be used. It is very much the same technique that many people use for ducking the bass guitar when it plays simultaneously with the kick drum.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Not wrong or right. Simply expressing an opinion, which is perfectly valid. Yes that option is used too.

People can use whichever they find most useful.

Maybe I came off a little harsh. My point was not to prove you wrong. Of course not!
I simply wanted to state that the other way around is more common, or that's what I think anyway.

Anyhow, sorry about your wrist. I hope it heals fast!

It would be nice if you did videos in the future that contained more tips and tricks in Pro Tools. Not plugins and instruments but more settings and stuff that makes life easier. I learned a lot going to a seminar with one of the big guys from Avid, Anders Glantz, and at the time I went to that seminar I had 6 years of experience in Pro Tools. Still, learned a lot of what the most basic buttons and options really does for the workflow.

For instance: does anyone know what all the six buttons under the smart tools are for? We got that question on the seminar and no one could answer for all of them.
